Recycling
Over the years, a number of MU’s offices/divisions/departments have developed recycling and waste management strategies in an effort to save money, to adhere to statutory requirements, and/or to be responsible stewards of the environment. Through these efforts, the University has shown progress with regard to recycling, waste management and waste reduction.
For example, in Fiscal 2011: *
- The University avoided almost $210,000 in landfill cost.
- Total University savings/income due to recycling was $515,000.
That's over half of a million dollars! - Nearly 1,600 tons of fiber waste (Paper & Cardboard) were recycled.
- Tiger Treasures (an end of the year residence hall recycling program) kept 20 tons of unwanted items out of the landfill, while raising money for participating United Way agencies.
- Tiger Tailgate Recycling (a program designed to help facilitate recycling among fans at MU's home football games) kept almost 19 tons of waste out of the landfill.
- In total, MU recycled 2,498 tons of waste, up from 1,869 tons in 2007.
That's an improvement of over 600 tons in four years!

ReycleMania 2012 Is Underway!
RecycleMania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over an 8-week period, colleges across the United States and Canada report the weekly amount of recycling and trash collected and are in turn ranked in various categories based on who recycles the most on a per capita basis, as well as which schools have the best recycling rate as a percentage of total waste and which schools generate the least amount of combined trash and recycling. With each week’s updated ranking, participating schools follow their performance against other colleges and use the results to rally their campus to reduce and recycle more.
National recognition is provided to the winning school in each category on the RecycleMania website and in a national press release. Winning schools receive an award made out of recyclable materials, and win the right to host that category’s special traveling trophy for the coming year.
